NHL Playoff Predictions - Eastern Conference, Round 1

Do you think it was any coincidence that this blog was started up two days before the NHL playoffs? Don't get me wrong, I love and follow every sport, but I am a puckhead first and always will be. I have to admit my heart still aches from the Leafs being eliminated just a week ago, but I'm finding it easier to move now that the apex of hockey excitement has arrived.

For this entry, I will be posting my predictions for the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs with a brief explanation for my reasoning behind each choice. And by brief, I mean five words per matchup. Short, sweet and to the point. So let's not waste any more time... (I've always wanted to say this) Here... we... go...

1. Washington Capitals vs 8. New York Rangers
  • Pick: Washington Capitals
  • Five: Semin, Backstrom, Green regain touch

2. Philadelphia Flyers vs 7. Buffalo Sabres

  • Pick: Philadelphia Flyers
  • Five: Talent, depth, grit, unfinished business

3. Boston Bruins vs 6. Montreal Canadiens

  • Pick: Montreal Canadiens
  • Five: Only needs one word ... Price

4. Pittsburgh Penguins vs 5. Tampa Bay Lightning

  • Pick: Pittsburgh Penguins
  • Five: Stingy defence triumphs prolific offence
Just a bonus note on the Pens/Bolts series ... I have a hunch that Sid will return if the series starts to swing in the Bolts favour. Expect 87 to hit this ice if the Pens fall into a 2 game hole or if the Bolts capture a third win.

Finally, I encourage you all to comment on the posts. If you have an opinion, I'd be happy to hear it. In fact, I challenge you to speak your mind in five words as well. That's all I have for now. I'll be back with my Western Conference Predictions later tonight.

  1. Im gonna have to disagree with you here my friend.
Here are my Picks for the first round.

    1v8
The King steals an extra game for the rangers but not much else. Gaborik can score in bunches but he is not designed for the playoffs and the shutdown line that the caps will run against him will be too much for a guy who just skates down the wing. The defense the caps learned to play this season is gonna make the difference in the first two round. Interesting to see how the Caps are going to handle Green. Until then Carlson will see tons of PP time.
    Caps in 6
(players to watch - Dubinski & Laich)

    2v7
Pronger’s return will reignite this slumping team but not until the sabers steal one in Philly. They will split in Buf as well and miller will steal them a third but the depth the flyers have up front is going to be too much for the shallow Sabers.
    Flyers in 7
(Players to watch - Leino & Stafford)

    3v6
With all this bad blood the series is going to be a penalty filled event with special teams and goaltending taking the driver seat. The Canadiens have had Boston's number on the PP this year but their 5v5 numbers are subpar to bad. In net Carey Price's career playoff numbers are horrid.. 5-11 record and a 3.17 GAA. He has also never played this much hockey at this level. Thomas on the other had looks to have his second Vezna in three years.
    Bruins in 6
(PTW - Luicic & Max Pacior.. oh wait.. right Chara.. um watch for Gionta)

    4v5
Contrary to wishful thinking.. Crosby will not be back this round unless it goes to 7.. Maybe.. With that being said I’m sorry Pens fans but Kennedy cannot carry this team's scoring. With Staal as a shutdown and Neal unable to score in a pens jersey, the hot offense of Tampa will squeak past the chippy D of the pens even if Fluery stands on his head. This is going to be a terrible series to watch other than some St Louis brilliance.
    Lightning in 6
    (PTW - Gagne & Kennedy)
