NHL Playoff Predictions - Western Conference Semifinals

I was surprised to see that there were no big upsets in the first round of this year's playoffs - the NHL playoffs have been notorious for them lately (Flyers & Habs 2010, Hurricanes & Ducks 2009).  Everyone loves to cheer for an underdog, and it was too bad that none of the Habs, Sabres or Hawks pulled through.  Yep, upsets are what make the NHL playoffs so great. "But Wes, why are you talking about upsets when there haven't been any?"

...

Just 'cauuuse...

1. Vancouver Canucks vs. 5. Nashville Predators
  • Pick: Nashville Predators in 6
  • Five: Elite team just found confidence

2. San Jose Sharks vs. 3. Detroit Red Wings
  • Pick: San Jose Sharks in 6
  • Five: Thornton, Marleau become playoff heroes

    ROUND ONE WEST RECAP:
    West – 2/4
So the west did not go as well as the sweep in the east. I will credit this to being a eastern conference time zone dweller and the less exposure to the west... if you’ll buy that.

    Pick – Van in 5 - Result - Van in 7
WOW! This was a RIDICULOUS series. I give the near collapse by the canucks to a couple things: A hit that turned Keith into a scary force, the return of bolland creating a third line of Bolland, Frolik & Bickell that was Fantastic, and a psychological edge that once the hawks won one, caused a downward spiral for the canucks. This had nothing to do with the sedin’s. Daniel had 5 goals in the 7 games relax. The Bolland line put together for game 4 saw Chi win, when Bickell was out for Game 7, the line was gone and so were the hawks. Bobby Lu was bad but he came through in the end.

    Pick – Sharks in 5 - Result - Sharks in 6
Penner was BAD. Doughty was great. And Williams came back but Big Joe was a Force with two game winners and even bagged the series winner. Little Joe was great with 3 goals. The reason it went a game longer than predicted was the fall of Niemi. Sharks keep rollin.

    Pick – Pheonix in 7 - Result - Wings in 4
Ok ok.. you have to take a few underdogs.. and u cant win em all. But this wasn’t even close and neither was I. The DesertDogs looked like they were too busy learning how to build igloos for their no homes in Manitoba and I was biased in a wanting the wings gone. Last year the Yotes put up a great fight this year Bryz was bad and Datsyuk was truly something unreal. If the Coyotes are leaving on Jest plane lets hope they leave that performance behind them.

Pick – Ducks in 7 - Results Preds in 6
I blame this lost on Bobby Ryan. And the fact that I failed to notice the preds offense found itself towards the end of the season. The high flying ducks went 15-0-5 in their last 20 games but with a Lubo playing hurt and a Ryan suspension (serious WHAT WAS HE DOING!!! He is the type of player who can make a difference and having him gone two games, 1 loss, through off chemistry of the top line and really hurt) they could not handle the preds who had some late game heroics from Webber in game 5. Rinne made some big saves when it mattered and like I said if they get some offense who knows how they could do, well they did and they moved on.

    ROUND TWO WEST PREDICTIONS:

    Van Vs Nash
Vancouver has gotten over there issues with the hawks, they were mentally haunting Luongo, but no more. The Canuks have to many lines for the Preds to deal with and the cancuks D is deep enough to deal with the Preds offence.
    Van in 5
    (PTW – Kesler – Sullivan)

    SJ vs Det
Gonna be a thriller! Det is hoping to get Zetterberg back soon and when they do look out because dats has been terrifyingly great. The sharks are in for a tough ride shutting down the redwings however the sharks can score well three lines deep and guys like Wellwood are picking up their game. Niemi if given the shot will bounce back well this series, he is a winner thats what they do. Big Joe is again going to be a force but this series Heatley will show up.
SJ in 7 in the best series of the round
    (PTW – Heatly – Cleary)
